James’ project focuses on simulating cancer progression and optimizing treatment through the development of Multi-level Parameterized Automata (MLPA), a novel machine learning approach that integrates genomic data with electronic health records (EHRs). By using stochastic cellular automata, the MLPA model simulates tumor growth, metastasis, and drug responses. This multi-scale approach tailor treatment strategies more to the biological characteristics of each patient’s cancer, with the goal of advancing personalized cancer treatment.

“My inspiration for this research began with my grandpa’s battle with cancer,” said James Gu. “It drove me to explore preventative treatments and early detection. Discovering parallels between my work on perturbation theory in nuclear engineering and multiscale modeling in cancer treatment, I developed a digital twin framework to optimize personalized therapies using artificial intelligence and my technical expertise.”
