The ice cream treats resemble miniature versions of the renowned Km0 milestone in Ha Giang. Complete with the landmark’s distinctive shape and design, each ice cream features raised lettering in the center displaying the inscription “QL2 Km 290 – Ha Giang 0.Km” (National Highway 2 Km 290 – Ha Giang 0.Km)
“I feel like I’m holding a symbol when I hold one of these ice creams. Just snapping a photo with it instantly transports you to one of Ha Giang’s most famous spots,” shared Thu Giang, a tourist.
According to Ms. Hoang Thanh Chieu, the innovative mind behind Ha Giang’s first iconic ice cream, the idea was inspired by 3D ice creams featuring famous landscapes in China. The goal was simple: to offer visitors to Ha Giang not only a refreshing treat but also a unique prop for capturing memorable photos.
To ensure durability during photoshoots, the ice creams boast special ingredients sourced from Germany, allowing them to maintain their shape for approximately 5 minutes without melting quickly. Moreover, the molds used for shaping the ice creams and the packaging boxes are custom-made, guaranteeing both uniqueness and quality.
Priced at 35,000 VND per piece, some tourists have remarked that the ice cream’s price tag is relatively high. However, many agree that its visual appeal and photogenic nature make it worth the investment.
“While the flavor may not be particularly unique, the eye-catching appearance and photo opportunities make this ice cream a worthwhile experience that can significantly boost local tourism,” commented Ngoc Mai, another tourist.
Since its debut in Ha Giang, the landmark ice cream has garnered considerable attention from tourists, particularly the younger demographic. On peak days, Ms. Chieu’s shop sells an average of about 300 pieces.
“Most customers purchase the ice cream to take away. After buying one, they often head straight to the nearby Km0 marker, located just 10 meters from the cafe, to snap some photos before returning to relax at the cafe,” Ms. Chieu noted.
This trend of ice cream shaped like famous landmarks is not unique to Ha Giang. Similar phenomena were observed in other tourist destinations across the country, including Tay Ninh and Hanoi, between August and October 2023. Ice creams resembling iconic structures such as Turtle Tower, Hanoi Cathedral, and the Ba Den mountain landmark have all contributed positively to these destinations’ tourism appeal.
