Analysis of Historic St. Mary’s City highlights the power of combining ancient DNA, archaeology, and genealogy to restore lost identities and track the migrations of America’s earliest English colonists and their descendants

At a Glance:

DNA analysis of 49 colonists from 17th-century St. Mary’s City reveals over 1.3 million living genetic relatives of Maryland’s founding settlers.

Researchers used DNA to trace the migration of St. Mary’s colonists from Great Britain and Ireland to Maryland, and subsequent migrations of their descendants across the United States, including a wave of migration of Maryland Catholics to Kentucky following the Revolutionary War.

The study uses a novel framework that combines genetic and genealogical information to propose possible identities for previously unknown individuals buried in Historic St. Mary’s City’s Chapel Field cemetery, leading to the possible identification of Maryland’s second governor, Thomas Greene (1609–1651).

PALO ALTO, Calif., May 14, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — As the United States prepares to mark its 250th anniversary, researchers from 23andMe Research Institute, Harvard University, and the Smithsonian Institution have teamed up to study one of the country’s founding settlements: St. Mary’s City, Maryland.

Established in 1634, St. Mary’s City was the first English settlement in the colony of Maryland. Despite existing written records and the ability of many present-day Americans to trace their ancestry to the historic city, many gaps remain in our knowledge of this early founder population.

Published in Current Biology, the study focuses on the genetic ancestry of 49 colonists who were buried in St. Mary’s City’s Chapel Field cemetery between 1634–1730.

By studying their DNA, the research team learned about the ancestral origins of this founding population and traced the migration of their descendants across the United States. Using a novel approach that combines genetic connections to research participants in the 23andMe database with self-reported family history information, they even propose possible identities for three previously unknown individuals buried in the cemetery, including Maryland’s second governor, Thomas Greene.

“This work highlights the power of ancient DNA analyses to fill in gaps in the historical record,” said co-senior author David Reich, professor of genetics in the Blavatnik Institute at Harvard Medical School and professor of human evolutionary biology in Harvard’s FAS. “While written records are extraordinarily rich, genetic data can still address gaps in that record and yield surprises.”

Expanding the Calvert Family

“This project has been decades in the making, starting with the excavation of three rare lead coffins from the Brick Chapel,” said Douglas Owsley, curator of biological anthropology at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. “Years of interdisciplinary research eventually led us to team up with Harvard for DNA analysis, which became the springboard for these incredible new genetic discoveries.”

The lead coffins contained the remains of Philip Calvert, his first wife, Anne Wolseley Calvert, and an infant son, who the genetic analysis revealed to be the son of Calvert and his second wife, Jane Sewell. The results of this genetic analysis were released in 2016 as part of a technical report, but are formally published for the first time in this study.

Philip Calvert, who served as the colony’s fifth governor, was the youngest son of George Calvert, England’s first Baron Baltimore. The prominent Calvert family played a critical role in the founding of the colony of Maryland. The colony was first envisioned by George Calvert as an expansion of the King’s realm and a place of religious freedom, especially for persecuted Catholics. The royal charter for the new colony was granted shortly after his death. In 1633, the first settlers set sail for Maryland aboard the ships The Ark and The Dove, led by George’s son Leonard Calvert. The travelers arrived at Maryland’s southern tip in 1634, where they founded St. Mary’s City. While many members of the Calvert family are known to have traveled to St. Mary’s City, only Philip’s burial location has been identified.

When comparing the DNA of Philip Calvert and his wife and son to the 46 other individuals included in this analysis, the research team identified three additional members of the Calvert family.

“Although additional work is needed to determine exactly how these individuals were related to Philip, this finding is significant given that several members of the extended Calvert family, including Philip’s half-brothers Leonard (1610–1647) and George (1613–1634), died in St. Mary’s during this period,” said Owsley.

The DNA study also identified related individuals belonging to five additional families buried at the site, including one that spanned three generations. “Because mortality was so high in the early days of the colony, finding a multigenerational family was a surprise,” Owsley added. “It’s a discovery that simply wouldn’t have been possible without genetic study.”

DNA helps trace historic migrations

By studying patterns of genetic sharing between the St. Mary’s individuals and over 11.5 million research participants in the 23andMe genetic database, the researchers were able to identify the likely places of origin for many of the colonial city’s earliest inhabitants. The majority of these individuals share the strongest connection with participants from Great Britain, particularly in western England and Wales, while several appear genetically Irish.

Further, by examining patterns of sharing across the United States, they discovered a strong genetic signal that mirrored a documented migration of Catholics from Maryland to Kentucky that primarily occurred between 1780–1820, driven by economic pressures and anti-Catholic bias in Maryland.

“Detecting such a clear genetic signal of this documented historical migration to Kentucky highlights the power of our approach,” said Éadaoin Harney, Senior Scientist, Population Genetics Research and Development at 23andMe Research Institute.

Possible identification of the colony of Maryland’s second governor, Thomas Greene (1609–1651)

By focusing on research participants who shared the strongest genetic connections to the St. Mary’s individuals, and inviting them to share details of their family histories, the research team tackled a novel problem: identifying otherwise unknown individuals by harnessing their genetic connections to living people.

Focusing on the burials of three related individuals identified at the site, researchers collected genealogical information from study participants who shared the strongest genetic connections to these individuals. By searching for overlaps in their family trees and integrating other anthropological information, the research team concluded that the most probable candidates for the identities of these individuals are Governor Thomas Greene, second governor of the colony of Maryland, his first wife Anne, and their son, Leonard.

“This is the first time that ancient DNA has been used to help identify unknown individuals, without any prior knowledge of who they might have been. And it just so happens that one of those individuals turned out to be one of colonial Maryland’s most prominent figures,” said Harney.

“We didn’t go into this study searching for Thomas Greene, but when the genetics team brought this name to me, it was remarkable how well the historical and archaeological records supported this potential identification,” said Henry Miller, Senior Research Fellow at Historic St. Mary’s City. “There is more work to be done to confirm his identity, but this genetic analysis was the key we needed to unlock this finding.”

“The possibilities that this kind of approach holds for enabling future reidentifications of historical individuals are truly exciting,” said Reich.

Honoring America’s 250th Anniversary through DNA

As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, this research underscores the enduring connections between the nation’s earliest European settlers and millions of living Americans. The project relied not just on cutting-edge science, but on the active support of the early Maryland descendant community, including those who trace their lineage to the original Ark and Dove voyage.

“Community collaboration is at the heart of this work,” concluded Miller. “The descendant community has championed this research from the beginning, and this genetic analysis allows us to directly link our archaeological findings with the living people who represent that enduring legacy today. It is incredibly meaningful as we reflect on the founding of our country.”

Singapore Airlines-backed Air India will substantially cut international flights during the peak June to August travel period, as the Iran war-led airspace restrictions and record-high jet fuel prices weigh on the carrier’s operational viability.

The Airline is cutting nearly 140 flights per week, which roughly translates to 27% of its total international flights, according to aviation sector experts.

“These changes are aimed at improving network stability and reducing last-minute inconvenience to passengers,” Air India said in a statement on Wednesday. Air India, co-owned by Tata Group and Singapore Airlines, will fly fewer flights to North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia.

The company is India’ second-largest airline, with 3.6 million seats and a 14% share of the market, according to aviation industry data provider OAG.

Indian carriers have been among the worst affected by the conflict in the Middle East, experts said, as they face closure of airspace over Iran, Iraq, Israel, Kuwait, Qatar, and the UAE. The country was already facing airspace usage curbs in Pakistan, as well as China, highlighted Sanjay Lazar, aviation expert and chief executive at Avialaz Consultants.

“Increased flying hours and added crew costs plus extra fuel used for the trip,” have made the sector totally unviable now, Lazar said, adding that jet fuel in India is up to 40% more expensive than in global hubs, due to local taxes.

Last month, the Federation of Indian Airlines had warned that carriers in the country were “under extreme stress and on the verge of closing down or stopping operations,” as per local media reports.

To offset the impact of falling currency and rising jet fuel costs, Indian carriers will need to raise prices “somewhere in the zone of 15%,” said Ansuman Deb, research analyst at ICICI Securities, told CNBC’s “Inside India.“

On Thursday, the Indian rupee, which has been among the worst-performing currencies in Asia so far this year, fell to an all-time low of 95.95 per dollar, LSEG data showed.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday had appeal to the country’s citizens to avoid international travel, as the country’s swelling import bill, pressures the rupee.

Major shareholders exit as Vietnam’s securities boom fuels record revenue growth at Vietcap.

As Vietnam’s stock market positions itself as Southeast Asia’s next major capital market story, insider transactions at Vietcap Securities are drawing fresh scrutiny from investors watching the country’s fast-evolving financial sector. A series of high-profile share sales linked to company insiders and affiliated investment funds comes at a time when Vietnam’s brokerage industry is benefiting from surging trading activity, margin lending demand, and renewed foreign investor interest ahead of the country’s anticipated market upgrade.

Vietnam Discovery Investment Fund, known locally as Quỹ Đầu tư Bản Việt Discovery, disclosed that it had sold all 135,000 shares of Vietcap between May 6 and May 8 through exchange-matched transactions, fully exiting its position in the brokerage firm. The fund is chaired by Nguyen Thanh Phuong, who also serves as Chairwoman of Vietcap. Despite the fund’s exit, Phuong personally remains a shareholder with roughly 30.8 million VCI shares, equivalent to 2.68% ownership.

The divestment follows another insider-related transaction earlier this year. Between March 10 and March 25, Viet Capital Fund Management — the management company overseeing the Discovery Fund — sold 218,300 VCI shares, reducing its stake from 0.08% to 0.05%.

You Might Be Interested In

Investor attention intensified further after To Hai’s spouse, Truong Nguyen Thien Kim, sold her entire 16.91 million-share stake in Vietcap through negotiated transactions between April 15 and May 4. The block represented approximately 1.47% of the company’s charter capital. Following the transaction, Kim no longer holds any VCI shares, while To Hai continues to own more than 174 million shares, equivalent to 15.19% of the company.

The insider selling activity comes against the backdrop of sharply improving business performance. In the first quarter of 2026, Vietcap reported operating revenue exceeding VND1.4 trillion ($55 million), up 65% year-on-year. The company benefited from strong gains in trading assets, brokerage activity, and margin lending as Vietnam’s equity market experienced a resurgence in liquidity and retail participation.

Revenue from financial assets measured at fair value through profit or loss (FVTPL) contributed more than VND500 billion, while brokerage income more than doubled to nearly VND340 billion. Lending and receivables income rose 61% to almost VND415 billion, underscoring how securities firms in Vietnam are increasingly functioning as shadow banking and wealth management platforms alongside traditional brokerage operations.

Still, profitability growth lagged revenue expansion due to rising costs. Operating expenses doubled to VND632 billion amid heavier brokerage and trading-related losses, while financial expenses jumped nearly 90%. Net profit after tax reached approximately VND341 billion, up 16% from a year earlier.

By the end of March 2026, Vietcap’s total assets had climbed to nearly VND37.1 trillion ($1.45 billion). Its balance sheet remains heavily exposed to margin lending and equity investments, with over VND16.6 trillion allocated to loans and more than VND13 trillion invested in available-for-sale assets. The firm also increased exposure to several major Vietnamese stocks, including FPT Corporation, Mobile World Investment Corporation, and Masan Consumer.

The timing of these insider exits is likely to fuel debate among investors: are major shareholders simply taking profits after a strong rally, or signaling caution as Vietnam’s market enters a more volatile phase? With Vietnam pushing toward emerging market status and global funds increasingly hunting for exposure to Southeast Asia’s growth story, moves inside firms like Vietcap may offer an early read on where smart money believes the market is heading next.

U.S. wholesale inflation data delivered a fresh jolt on Wednesday, with prices surging 6% year-over-year in April, the sharpest annual gain since 2022. The hotter-than-expected reading adds pressure on Federal Reserve leadership and complicates the economic backdrop as Trump engages in high-level diplomacy.

In a key development for U.S. monetary policy, Kevin Warsh has secured Senate confirmation as the next chair of the Fed. His leadership will be immediately tested by sticky inflation and potential rate implications from global energy shocks.

Meanwhile, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz has continued to hurt global oil flows, with OPEC reporting a 30% since the start of the Iran war in late February. It also warned of significant risks to demand growth this year.

India, whose significance to the U.S. foreign policy has been shaped by frictions between Washington and Beijing, will be keeping a close eye on the meeting between President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping.

When the summit between the world’s top two economies begins later in the day, India will be hoping that Trump’s softening stance toward China does not lead to a bargain that diminishes New Delhi’s role in the Indo-Pacific, experts said.

If Trump prioritizes a bilateral grand bargain with Beijing, India will have “reasonable concerns that the United States will treat China as the central negotiating partner in Asia rather than as the central strategic challenge,” Ronak D. Desai, visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, told CNBC.

Therefore, “India will need to make its strategic value harder to overlook,” Desai said, adding this would mean the U.S.-India relationship must lead to more tangible outcomes in sectors like defense, maritime security, critical minerals, energy, and manufacturing.

Trump and Xi last met in Busan, South Korea, in November, where the U.S. president called Xi “a very tough negotiator,” and said that the two sides had “always had a very good relationship.” Meanwhile, Xi urges Beijing and Washington to be “partners and friends.” It was during this meeting that Trump also referred to China and the U.S. as G2.

“He [Trump] favors strong-armed leaders,” Nirupama Rao, former Indian ambassador to the U.S., China, and Sri Lanka, told CNBC’s “Inside India” on Monday, hinting at Trump’s conciliatory stance toward Xi in the recent past.

Shift in U.S. foreign policy

For more than two decades, consecutive U.S. administrations have deepened ties with India as a measure to counterbalance China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific. India, being the world’s largest democracy, as opposed to China’s one-party government, is seen as a natural partner to the U.S., experts said.

“It was Trump who, in his first term, had challenged America’s China policy and even gave impetus to QUAD,” said Harsh Pant, vice president of studies and foreign policy at the Observer Research Foundation. QUAD is a diplomatic partnership between Australia, India, Japan, and the United States that aims for a “peaceful, stable, and prosperous Indo-Pacific.”

Trade tensions between China and the U.S., which escalated during Trump’s first term, also made India one of the many beneficiaries of the China+1 policy, as U.S. firms started to diversify their supply chains away from Beijing.

But during Trump’s second term, there has been a shift in the U.S. foreign policy, with Washington and New Delhi’s relations getting frayed over trade and tariffs. The U.S. president even warned Apple not to build smartphones in India as he pursues his “America First” agenda.

“The narrative of India as a counterbalance to China has weakened under the Trump administration,” said Chietigj Bajpaee, senior research fellow for South Asia at Chatham House, adding that Trump’s foreign policy during the second term has been more transactional and less value-driven.

India-U.S. relations suffered a major jolt last year, after Washington accused New Delhi of profiteering from cheap Russian oil and levied 25% in penalty tariffs, while looking past China’s Russian oil purchases.

Following the Xi-Trump meeting in Busan last year, Washington also cut tariffs on Chinese goods to around 47%, lower than the 50% that it was charging on imported Indian goods, before reducing them earlier this year.

“The [Trump] second administration started on a very hawkish note when it came to China, only to quickly realize that it did not have suitable substitutes for Chinese components necessary for US companies and consumers,” said Aryan D’Rozario, associate fellow, chair on India and emerging Asia economics at CSIS. That led to a softening of the stance against Beijing.

While U.S.-India ties soured as Trump pursued his transactional foreign policy, Beijing and New Delhi have been embroiled in border disputes for decades and relations have been fraught with tensions. Against that backdrop, India will be watching the outcome of the U.S.-China summit more closely than most Asian countries.

“From New Delhi’s perspective, it will be looking at the Trump-Xi meeting with a degree of trepidation amid concerns about the revival of a so-called ‘G2’ concept, which marginalizes middle-powers like India,” Bajpaee said.

Charleston, SC, May 13, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Palmetto Publishing has released How She Became Her Own Doctor, a new memoir by Beata Kis. The book traces the journey of a practicing physician and mother of three who, after a sudden and mysterious collapse in 2021, was forced to confront the limits of the medicine she had spent her career practicing.

Kis had built her life around caring for others. As a doctor and a mother, she held the weight of her patients’ needs and her family’s demands with steady hands. But beneath the surface, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and depression were quietly pulling her under. In 2021, her body gave out entirely, leaving her stripped of her career, her home, and her sense of identity. She found herself on a cold bathroom floor, facing a darkness that carried painful echoes of her own mother’s story.

Rather than surrender, Kis chose to listen inward. The memoir follows her through intuitive painting, energy healing, sound therapy, and the painstaking work of unearthing the buried beliefs and inherited pain she had carried since childhood. Each step demanded that she abandon the certainty of clinical protocols and trust something she could not measure or prescribe. The stakes were not abstract. With three children depending on her and no clear path forward, the cost of failure was losing herself entirely.

Beata Kis stated, “I wrote this book for every woman who has given everything to everyone else and wonders if there is anything left of her own life to reclaim. I wanted to show that healing does not always come from a prescription. Sometimes it begins the moment you stop performing wellness and start listening to what your body and soul have been trying to tell you.”

The memoir arrives at a moment when conversations around burnout in healthcare, the integration of holistic practices with conventional medicine, and women’s chronic illness are reaching a wider audience than ever. Readers who connected with Gabor Maté’s When the Body Says No or Glennon Doyle’s Untamed will find familiar ground in Kis’s candid account. The book speaks directly to women in caregiving and healing professions, as well as anyone navigating the intersection of chronic illness, spiritual awakening, and personal transformation.

How She Became Her Own Doctor is available for purchase online at Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com. As the founder of LumiSol Wellness and Retreat Center, she supports individuals in reclaiming their health, vitality, and soul purpose. Her distinctive ability to bridge the worlds of Western medicine and intuitive, holistic healing lends her work both scientific credibility and deeply personal resonance.

Beata’s debut memoir, How She Became Her Own Doctor, was born from a life-altering experience. In 2021, a mysterious collapse forced her to reevaluate everything she thought she knew about medicine, healing, and herself. Through Reiki, sound healing, deep inner work, and intuitive guidance, she uncovered the strength and wisdom to become her own doctor, body, mind, and soul. Written with poetic vulnerability and raw honesty, the book is both a testament to self-healing and an invitation for readers, especially women in caregiving and healing professions, to reclaim their own voices and lives.

Originally from Hungary and now living in Wisconsin with her family, Beata draws creative and spiritual nourishment from her roots and her ongoing study of holistic wellness practices. Her writing reflects the same introspective, soulful energy she brings to her healing work, offering readers not just a story but a companion on the path to transformation.
Ho Chi Minh City turns bánh mì into a tourism powerhouse while tightening food safety standards after recent poisoning cases.

As global travelers increasingly seek authentic culinary experiences in Southeast Asia, Vietnam is betting that one of its most iconic street foods — the bánh mì sandwich — can become both a tourism magnet and a soft-power export. In Ho Chi Minh City, the fourth annual Vietnam Bánh Mì Festival attracted more than 250,000 visitors over four days, highlighting the growing commercial and cultural value of Vietnam’s street food economy.

The event, held from April 23 to 26, saw attendance rise 20% from last year, according to the Ho Chi Minh City Tourism Association. Long queues formed throughout the festival as both locals and international tourists crowded into tasting zones, artisan stalls, and culinary showcases dedicated to the country’s globally recognized baguette sandwich.

But this year’s festival unfolded under unusual pressure. Vietnam has recently faced several food poisoning incidents linked to bánh mì vendors, raising broader concerns about food hygiene standards in one of Asia’s fastest-growing tourism destinations. Organizers responded with an aggressive food safety strategy that became the festival’s defining success story.

Authorities required all participating food vendors to complete mandatory food safety training, conduct health checks for kitchen staff, and comply with strict hygiene protocols including gloves, masks, and monitored food preparation processes. Inspection teams reportedly photographed cooking stations throughout the event and maintained real-time oversight, with organizers warning that any violations would result in immediate removal.

Despite Vietnam’s intense summer heat and heightened public scrutiny, officials confirmed that no major food safety incidents were recorded during the festival. The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety said vendors were subjected to extensive documentation checks, including ingredient traceability, business licensing verification, and daily invoice monitoring for food supplies. Random food sampling and on-site inspections were also conducted throughout the event.

The success carries implications far beyond street food. Vietnam is increasingly positioning gastronomy as a strategic tourism asset alongside beaches, manufacturing growth, and digital nomad appeal. With international arrivals rebounding and Southeast Asia competing aggressively for tourism spending, culinary branding is becoming a key differentiator for cities such as Bangkok, Singapore, and Ho Chi Minh City.

Organizers now plan to expand the festival internationally. Vietnam’s embassy in Singapore has reportedly expressed interest in hosting a future edition abroad, a move that could transform bánh mì from a beloved Vietnamese export into a larger regional culinary brand with commercial potential across Asia-Pacific markets.

The bigger question is whether Vietnam can scale its street food culture globally without losing authenticity — or compromising safety. If Ho Chi Minh City’s bánh mì festival is any indication, the country is trying to prove that informal street cuisine can evolve into a world-class tourism industry while keeping the flavor that made travelers fall in love with Vietnam in the first place.

HKUST Led Project Marks Hong Kong’s First Scientific Payload on the National Space Station

HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach Newswire – 13 May 2026 – The world’s first lightweight, high‑resolution, high‑precision synergistic observatory for carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₄) emission point sources – named “MUSICO”, Multi‑Spectral Imaging Carbon Observatory, led by The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) – was successfully launched aboard the Tianzhou‑10 cargo spacecraft on May 11 and has arrived at China’s Tiangong Space Station. This is not only Hong Kong’s first scientific payload deployed on the national space station, but also a historic breakthrough for the city in the development of high‑end aerospace instruments. The project fully demonstrates Hong Kong’s strong capability to build national‑level cutting-edge scientific payloads, to participate in long‑term space station missions, and to play a key role in addressing global climate change while serving the nation’s strategic “carbon peak and carbon neutrality” goals.

The project is led by an interdisciplinary research team from HKUST, comprising experts from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the Division of Emerging Interdisciplinary Areas, the Division of Environment and Sustainability, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and the Division of Public Policy. In late 2024, the project received formal approval from the Technology and Engineering Center for Space Utilization of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CSU.CAS), the general research center for the Space Utilization System. It is jointly developed with the CAS Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics, and funded by the Special Call (Aerospace Technology) of the Innovation and Technology Support Program under the Innovation and Technology Commission of the HKSAR Government.

MUSICO is a lightweight, high‑resolution, high‑precision greenhouse gas point‑source detection payload capable of accurately measuring CO₂ and CH₄ — two major greenhouse gases — from space. Smaller than a domestic washing machine, the instrument maintains extra-high spectral resolution and one hundred‑meter spatial resolution. By analyzing intensity changes of sunlight over specific spectral bands as it passes through the atmosphere and reflects off the Earth’s surface, MUSICO identifies gas‑specific absorption features to determine gas concentrations and pinpoint individual emission sources, enabling effective monitoring of key facilities such as power plants and landfills.

Prof. SUN Dong, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry of the HKSAR Government, remarked, “This HKUST led project represents Hong Kong’s first scientific payload aboard the Tiangong Space Station, a major milestone for Hong Kong in the nation’s space missions. The national 15th Five Year Plan identifies accelerating green and low carbon transition, building a space powerhouse, and achieving carbon peak as key priorities. The successful deployment of a payload autonomously developed by a Hong Kong research team on Tiangong powerfully demonstrates that Hong Kong scientists possess top tier research and technology translation capabilities in frontier fields such as aerospace technology and green low carbon science, providing the nation with high quality, verifiable scientific data to accelerate the realization of the dual carbon goals.”

Prof. Nancy IP, President of HKUST, said, “We are deeply honored that our HKUST research team can participate in scientific missions on the national space station, and we sincerely thank the nation and the HKSAR Government for their long‑standing trust and support. This project not only highlights HKUST’s accumulated strengths in aerospace engineering, satellite remote sensing, and environmental engineering, but also proves that Hong Kong’s research capabilities can make substantial contributions on the nation’s highest‑level aerospace platforms. As the world’s first lightweight high‑precision greenhouse gas point‑source detection payload, MUSICO will continue to operate on the national space station, providing autonomous, controllable, high‑reliability CO₂ and CH₄ emission monitoring data that directly support the nation’s dual‑carbon goals and provide scientific backing for the ‘Beautiful China’ initiative and global climate governance.”

President Ip added, “In recent years, HKUST has been deepening its efforts in deep‑space exploration and low‑orbit satellite technology — following the successful launch of Hong Kong’s first higher‑education satellite in 2023, we are now actively participating in the nation’s Chang’e‑8 lunar exploration mission. Looking ahead, HKUST will continue to leverage its strengths in artificial intelligence, robotics, and materials science to accelerate the translation of space‑related technologies and nurture high‑end talent, contributing to the nation’s accelerated drive to build a space powerhouse and achieve green, low‑carbon, high‑quality development.”

Prof. SU Hui, Project Lead, Chair Professor of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Global STEM Professor at HKUST, said, “The development of MUSICO involved overcoming multiple critical technical challenges — namely, how to achieve high spectral resolution, fine spatial resolution, and synergistic multi‑gas observation under strict size and weight constraints. The team conducted extensive testing and optimization in optical design, precision manufacturing, and system integration to ensure the instrument can deliver reliable, accurate greenhouse gas data over long periods under high‑speed operation and extreme space environments. Successfully integrating these key technologies into a lightweight payload represents a landmark engineering and scientific achievement, demonstrating that the technology has reached internationally advanced standards.”

Prof. ZHANG Limin, Co‑Project Lead, National Engineer Awardee and Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at HKUST, emphasized, “MUSICO’s observational coverage spans most land and ocean areas across low‑to‑mid‑latitude regions, providing consistent and comparable greenhouse gas monitoring data for different regions. The project’s results will be shared with government agencies and research institutions, supporting scientific research and practical applications in the Guangdong‑Hong Kong‑Macao Greater Bay Area and in other parts of China. They will also provide a scientific basis for cross‑regional climate research and emission reduction efforts along the Belt and Road, contributing to the global response to climate change. This is both a vivid example of HKUST’s research strength serving national strategy and a concrete practice of Hong Kong’s research capabilities contributing to global climate governance.”

The research project is co‑led by Prof. SU Hui, Chair Professor of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Global STEM Professor at HKUST, and Prof. ZHANG Limin, Chair Professor and Head of the same department. Prof. ZHAI Chengxing, Associate Professor of the Division of Emerging Interdisciplinary Areas serves as the mission system engineer. Other team members include: Senior Scientific Officer Dr. RONG Pingping, Prof. ZHANG Jize, and Prof. WANG Zhe from HKUST’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering; Prof. NING Zhi, Prof. SHI Xiaoming, and Prof. GU Dasa from the Division of Environment and Sustainability; Prof. MA Xiaojuan from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering; Prof. ZHU Pengyu from the Division of Public Policy; Prof. GAO Meng from Hong Kong Baptist University; and Prof. LI Jia from Lingnan University.

The project has also garnered strong industry support, including funding from HKUST-incubated startup Stellerus Technology Limited. Meanwhile, CLP Power Hong Kong Limited will collaborate with the project team to explore leveraging the data collected by MUSICO to complement its relevant assessments.
