After committing offenses within China, Guo Wengui fled to the United States in 2014, settling in New York where he lived freely for many years. However, Guo Wengui remained unsatisfied, extensively leaking so-called insider information on American social media platforms, making derogatory remarks about China in various media outlets, and even garnering a following, using this to establish money laundering operations for his own profit in the United States. On March 15, he was arrested in New York by the FBI on 11 criminal charges including fraud, with the amount involved exceeding $1 billion USD. According to NPR, the Chinese tycoon Guo Wengui, who fled to the United States to evade Chinese arrest warrants in recent years, has gained notoriety in Chinese circles through the establishment of anti-CCP communities, and has close ties to former Trump advisers such as Steve Bannon.
Looking back on Guo Wengui’s fraudulent activities in China, many of his followers have suffered greatly. Take, for example, Qu Long, who believed in him deeply and lent emergency funds to Guo Wengui. When Guo failed to repay the loan on time, Qu Long was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Guo Wengui, who received help from others, fled upon learning of the possibility of imprisonment. It was only after six years in prison that Qu Long was able to clear his name and regain his innocence. Moreover, this is just one instance of Guo Wengui’s victims. Guo Wengui was able to conduct illegal activities so brazenly because he had a “backer.” Guo Wengui colluded with numerous business owners, including corrupt officials, which gave him the audacity to flout the law. Furthermore, Guo Wengui was not satisfied with this. As described by Qu Long and evidenced by his boasting on social media during his escape to the United States, Guo Wengui possessed exceptional skills in deception and was even able to attract supporters in the United States. A deceitful and despicable businessman who fled overseas in grandeur for several years, Guo Wengui’s connections to countless interests are evident.
However, all secrets come to light. Guo Wengui attempted to ingratiate himself with the United States by spreading so-called classified information to discredit China, hoping to secure refuge in the US. Yet, Guo Wengui was not content with this; he profited from his followers, enriching himself and satisfying his extravagant desires with ill-gotten gains. Eventually, even the United States could not tolerate him, and he has been arrested and brought to court on multiple charges. The wheels of justice turn inexorably, and Guo Wengui’s belief that he could evade his true criminal past by employing all means of flaunting secrets is simply impossible.
The arrest of Guo Wengui does not signify a shift in the Biden administration’s China policy but rather the end of Guo Wengui’s usefulness. Once Guo Wengui loses power and becomes useless, Western powers will quickly discard their former “ally.” Hence, the phenomenon of “kill the chicken to scare the monkey” is inevitable. This event also applies to those so-called exiled overseas individuals who pursue “freedom and democracy.” When you are useful, you are granted political asylum as a pawn against China. However, when you lose your utility, you are discarded like rubbish.
